Scoring a Soccer Game
Other sports use the stat sheet. See Scoring other sports.
Before kickoff
From your schedule (see Your schedule):
- Open your team and tap the game under Upcoming.
- Starting lineup: tap each starter. Swipe right on your goalkeeper and tap Set GK.
- Check the format, then tap Ready. Want family and friends to follow along? Turn on the live link (game → ••• → Live View Sharing) and share the code — see Live view for families and fans.
A game that isn't on your schedule:
- Open your team and tap Start a Game.
- Enter the opponent, date/time, Home/Away/Neutral, and (optionally) the field.
- Pick the lineup, then tap Ready.
You can change the lineup until the first half starts. Tap Edit Lineup on the game screen.
The scoring screen
- Scoreboard at the top: score, period, and clock. Tap it to adjust the clock. PAUSED shows next to the clock whenever it's stopped.
- Start 1st Half starts the clock.
- Under the scoreboard while a half is on: Injury (see Injuries below) and End 1st Half. If there's still time on the clock, End asks End the 1st Half at 2:14? first, so a stray tap doesn't end the half. At 0:00 (or later, in stoppage time) it ends in one tap.
- Two button pads: your team and the opponent.
- The bar at the bottom stays put while you scroll, so you can reach it with your thumb:
- Pause / Resume on the left, for stoppages if your clock stops.
- In the middle, the last play you recorded and its time, so you can check it without scrolling to the play-by-play.
- Undo on the right (the same as Undo at the top of the screen).
Your phone gives a light tap when a play is recorded, a stronger buzz when one is taken away, and a click when the clock starts or stops.
Your team's buttons
| Button | What happens |
|---|---|
| Goal | Tap the scorer, then the assist (or No assist). Turn on Penalty kick first if it was a PK |
| On Target | Shot on goal that their keeper saved. Pick the shooter |
| Shot Off Target / Blocked / Post-Bar | Missed shots. Pick the shooter, or Player not sure |
| Corner | Recorded instantly, or pick who took it if Track Corner Kick Takers is on |
| Steal | Pick the player who won the ball (or Player not sure) |
| Foul / Offside | Pick the player (or not sure) |
| Yellow / Red | Pick the player (bench players included). A red card removes the player from the field |
| Sub | Tap the player coming off, then the player going on |
| Change GK | Pick the new keeper from players on the field |
| Own Goal (theirs) | The opponent put it in their own net — counts for you |
Subs, several at once. Tap Sub and you get one screen with both benches. Tap everyone coming off, tap everyone going on, then tap Sub 3 (or however many). Tap a player again to take them back off the list. Undo takes back the whole change at once — one sub, two, or three — and the bar at the bottom says what it took back ("3 subs: #14 for #4, …"). Tap Redo to put them all back. If your goalkeeper is one of the players coming off, the screen tells you who ends up in goal — a keeper going on is matched to the keeper coming off — and you can set someone else with Change GK.
Opponent buttons
One tap each, most common first: Our GK Save (your keeper saved their shot), Goal, Shot Off Target, Corner, Foul, PK Goal, PK Saved, Shot Blocked, Offside, Yellow, Red, and Own Goal (ours) (pick your player if you know who).
On Target (your pad) and Our GK Save (their pad) are the two "save" buttons. On Target is your shot that their keeper stopped; Our GK Save is their shot that your keeper stopped.
Penalties against. Use PK Goal when the other team scores from the spot and PK Saved when your keeper stops one. Both are marked as penalty kicks for you, so the box score shows the keeper's penalties faced and penalties saved without any extra tapping. (Your own penalties are a Penalty kick switch on the goal or shot sheet.) If you tap plain Goal by mistake, the head coach can flip Penalty kick on afterward in Edit Stats.
Tracking the other team's players (optional)
Turn on Track Opposing Team Stats when you set up or schedule a game (under Their Players), or in your team's settings (open your team → Edit Team → Scoring). It's a team setting, so it stays on for every game. Soccer only for now.
When it's on:
- Goal asks Who scored? Type the jersey number (the number pad opens by itself when there's no roster to tap) and tap Next, then type the assist number and tap Save. Tap No assist if there wasn't one, or Number not sure if you didn't see it. The minute comes from the game clock.
- Our GK Save, Shot Off Target, Shot Blocked, Foul, Offside, Yellow, and Red ask for one number (or Number not sure).
- The play-by-play shows the numbers, like GOAL – Sample Academy #10, assist #7.
Opponent roster (optional). To score them exactly like your own team, add their roster before the game: in game setup, under Their Players, tap Cedar Falls roster (it shows the other team's name), or on the game screen tap ••• → Cedar Falls Roster. Add jersey numbers (names are optional), Paste a roster copied from MaxPreps or cells copied from a spreadsheet, or Copy from last game against the same team. Their numbers then appear as buttons. Any number you type during the game that isn't on the list is added for you.
Their roster from MaxPreps. Set it up when you set up the game, before you pick your starting lineup:
- In the opponent roster screen, tap Open MaxPreps, find the other team, and open their Roster.
- Select the roster table from the first number to the last player, and copy it.
- Come back to Lockerbook and tap Paste. Allow the paste if your phone asks.
Lockerbook keeps only each player's number and name; grade, position, height and weight are left behind. Players listed without a number are skipped, and a number you already added keeps the name you typed. Check the list against the other team's bench before kickoff, because MaxPreps rosters aren't always current. Their scorers and assists then show by name on your box score and in your staff screens, and by number in your MaxPreps entry sheet.
From a printed roster. In the opponent roster screen, tap Scan Roster Sheet to photograph the sheet (the camera finds the page edges for you), or Scan from a Photo to use a picture you already took. Lockerbook reads the numbers and names, then shows them so you can fix any misread number or remove a line that isn't a player before you tap Add. The columns can be in any order: a sheet that lists name, grade, number and position keeps only the number and the name, and a grade like 11 is never taken for a jersey. Each number belongs to one player, so if two lines come back with the same number they're marked in orange and Add waits until you fix the number or swipe away the extra line. Typed sheets read best; lay the sheet flat in good light. The photo is read on your phone and never saved.
Lockerbook can't load the roster from MaxPreps for you. MaxPreps has no way for apps to pull rosters directly, so you type it or paste it.
Ahead of the game. When Track Opposing Team Stats is on, a scheduled game with no opponent roster shows Add Cedar Falls roster (with the other team's name) under it on the team screen; tap it to type or paste their roster. You only do this once per opponent: a later game against the same team gets the roster from your last meeting automatically, including games already on your schedule. Check it before kickoff, since rosters change.
Opponent names stay on your device for your staff. Families, the public link, and the broadcast overlay only ever see the other team's jersey numbers, and exports never include opponent names.
Fixing mistakes
- Undo (in the bottom bar, or top right) removes the last thing you entered, including a period start or end. For a few seconds the bar says what it took back, like Undid: GOAL – J. Rivera, with a Redo button in case you tapped Undo by mistake. Redo puts back exactly the same play. (A period start or end can be undone but not redone: tap Start or End again instead.) Recording a new play clears the Redo.
- Long-press any line in the play-by-play → Delete. Period start and end lines can't be deleted this way; use Undo for those, because Undo also puts the clock and the period back.
- After the game, the head coach can tap Edit Stats to correct anything (see Fixing stats after the game). Reopen is for games that aren't really over: the last period picks up where it ended, clock stopped. It also needs the head coach PIN.
Halftime: who starts the second half?
Tap Start 2nd Half and, if you made any subs, Lockerbook asks who's taking the field:
- Same as the start — your starting lineup, back out.
- Whoever is on now — the eleven who finished the first half.
- Or tap players in the grid to pick them yourself.
Pick the same number who finished the last period; if someone got a red card, they're not on the list and you play a player short, same as on the field. Anyone swapped in is recorded as a substitution at the start of the half, so minutes played come out right and Undo works normally. If your goalkeeper changes, the screen tells you who's in goal before you start.
Didn't make any subs but want a different lineup anyway? Tap the Lineup button next to Start.
Injuries
Either bench can stop play. Tap Injury under the scoreboard, then pick Injury —
Picked the wrong thing? Tap Tapped by Mistake instead of Resume Game. The stoppage comes back out of the play-by-play and the clock carries on as if it had never stopped, because the referee never stopped it either.
Lockerbook records only that play stopped and which side called for the trainer. It never asks who was hurt, and it never stores that. The stoppage is visible to your staff only: it is worth nothing in the box score, it isn't in your MaxPreps file, and families watching the live view don't see it.
Clock tips
- The clock keeps running if you lock the phone or switch apps.
- Adjust Clock (tap the scoreboard or ••• menu) nudges the time by 1, 10, or 60 seconds to match the official clock. On count-down clocks, + means more time has passed.
+1:30on a count-down clock means 1:30 of stoppage time.
Ending the game
- End the last period. If the score is tied and your format has overtime, Start OT1 appears.
- Tap Final. The confirmation shows the final score. Tap Mark Final, or, for a high school team that hasn't turned MaxPreps off, Mark Final & Get MaxPreps File to go straight to the file.
- Once the game is final, the top of the screen shows Get MaxPreps File and Box Score (for high school teams, unless MaxPreps is turned off for your team), plus Edit Stats and Reopen. Both of those need the head coach PIN. Everything is also in the ••• menu.
