Teams and Rosters

Teams

Each team is one roster for one season — for example, "Example High Girls Varsity, 2026 Fall." Create separate teams for JV and varsity.

MaxPreps (high school teams in sports MaxPreps imports): the first time you open a team, Lockerbook asks Will this team post stats to MaxPreps?

  • Yes shows the MaxPreps stats file, upload steps, and MaxPreps reminders on the team, box score, and export screens.
  • No hides them. You can still share the box score sheet and spreadsheet.
  • Change the answer anytime in Edit Team → MaxPreps. College and club/travel teams don't see the question, because MaxPreps covers U.S. high schools.

Levels: High School (Varsity, JV, Freshman), College, and Club / Travel. Each has its own default game format for your sport.

Soccer scoring settings (open the team → Edit Team → Scoring):

  • Track Opposing Team Stats asks for the other team's jersey numbers on their goals, shots, fouls and cards.
  • Track Corner Kick Takers asks who took each of your corners, so corner kicks can go to MaxPreps.

Edit or delete: open the team and scroll to the bottom. Deleting a team removes its roster and every game on this device. This can't be undone.

Players

Field Required Notes
First / last name At least one Shown to staff, and to invited family viewers unless you hide names
Nickname No What you actually call them on the sideline. Staff only — it never leaves your device, never goes to MaxPreps, and never shows on a live view, even for family
Jersey number Yes Up to 3 digits; "00" is allowed. Must be unique among active players
Positions No Soccer: pick one or more; the first is primary, and goalkeepers are suggested as the starting keeper. Other sports: type it (for example P/SS, PG, QB, Libero, or a weight class)
Graduation year No
MaxPreps athlete ID No Helps MaxPreps match the right player on import
Active — Turn off for players who leave; their past stats stay

Lockerbook does not ask for or store phone numbers, emails, addresses, birthdays, or photos.

How names read on the pad. Settings → Player names picks what you see while you're scoring: Initial + last name (#9 C. Striker), Last name (#9 Striker), First name (#9 Casey), or Nickname (#9 Case). Anyone without a nickname falls back to the initial-and-last form, so nobody ever shows up blank. The other team's players follow the same setting, so a scanned or pasted "Jordan Lee" reads as #10 J. Lee. This is a setting for your device and changes nothing about what's stored — your MaxPreps file and every export always use the real first and last name.

Lots of players? Import them from a spreadsheet. See Import and export your roster.

Coaching staff

Your assistants and scorekeepers score the same game from their own iPhone or iPad, and every tap lands in one book.

  • Open the team → Staff (head coach PIN) → Invite…, pick a role, and send the invitation with Messages, Mail or AirDrop. They tap it and join with their own Apple Account.
  • Roles: Assistant Coach and Associate Coach score games, manage the roster and share the live link; Scorekeeper scores games; Viewer follows along. Only you, the head coach, fix a game after it's final, delete a played game, change roles, or remove someone.
  • Everyone sees only what their role can change. A scorekeeper sees the roster but can't edit it, and a viewer opens each game on its box score.
  • The game clock is shared: whoever starts, stops or adjusts it does it for everyone.
  • To leave a team someone else shared with you, open it and tap Leave Team…. The plays you recorded stay in the head coach's games.
  • The Staff screen shows who is on the team, their role, and who is active now. Change a role or remove someone from the role menu; a removed coach loses the team on their devices, and the plays they recorded stay in your games.
  • No signal is fine: everyone keeps scoring, and the corner of the scoring screen says Synced, 3 to send, Syncing… or Will retry. Plays from others appear with a short note, such as "2 plays from Coach Ramos." If two people record the same goal, both show; delete one after the game.
  • The team lives in your own iCloud, encrypted. Lockerbook keeps no email addresses or phone numbers.

Rules

Each team has Rules: the organization whose rules you play under. High school teams start on NFHS (bowling and tennis follow USBC and USTA with your state's changes), college teams on NCAA, and club teams on their own league's rules. Club and travel coaches can pick a sanctioning body instead, such as USA Softball, USSSA, PGF or Alliance Fastpitch.

  • The rules decide which game formats are offered, and each set has a link to the organization's official rules.
  • In softball, the run rule shows under the rules (for example 12 after 3 · 10 after 4 · 8 after 5), and the pad tells you when it's reached. You still end the game yourself.
  • Playing a tournament under someone else's rules? Change Rules on that game when you set it up.
  • Your state association or tournament may change some rules. Adjust the format to match.
